Overview
Neurosciences at Storrs is a graduate area of concentration on the Storrs campus of the University of Connecticut that is jointly sponsored by the Departments of Physiology and Neurobiology, Psychology and Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition, faculty from the Plant Sciences and Pathobiology Departments, whose research relates to Neuroscience, participate. Research in the Physiology and Neurobiology Department focuses primarily on studies of neurobiological mechanisms at the cellular, molecular and systems level. Neuroscience research in the Psychology Department is concentrated in the Behavioral Neuroscience Division, and encompasses primarily systems and behavioral approaches to research. Neuroscience researchers in Pharmaceutical Sciences focus on medicinal chemistry to design new drugs and probe protein structure and function, and cellular approaches to the understanding of brain function. Students in the Neurosciences area of concentration are enrolled in one of the three sponsoring departments and apply directly to that department. In addition to the requirements of the home department, students in Neuroscience have a large number of available courses and opportunities for interaction with Neuroscientists across campus. The Neuroscience at Storrs program offers Fellowships to selected students based on meritorious research accomplishments (see Funding Opportunities), and sponsors several special events each year. Of particular importance is the Annual Neuroscience at Storrs Meeting, where Neuroscience faculty, postdocs and students (both graduate and undergraduate) present their research in an informal, catered meeting format. |
